Tallinn’s old town has a broad range of places to eat, from theatrical medieval dining rooms to contemporary restaurants and small cafés. This selection reflects the places we tried during our visit. As restaurants change over time, check current opening hours and menus before going.
Olde Hansa
Olde Hansa recreates the dining room of a wealthy medieval merchant close to Town Hall Square. Period-inspired recipes, music and a long list of beers and spirits make it an intentionally immersive experience rather than a quiet dinner.
Controvento
Controvento sits in St Catherine’s Passage, one of the most atmospheric corners of the old town. The menu focuses on familiar Italian dishes; we chose pizza and found it a welcome, informal stop during a day of walking.
Umami
Umami took a contemporary approach, combining seasonal ingredients with flavours from beyond Estonia. Fresh juices, craft beer and a carefully considered interior made the restaurant feel relaxed but deliberate.
Leib
Leib focused on Estonian ingredients and seasonal cooking. Its courtyard garden was particularly pleasant in warmer weather, while house-made bread and desserts gave the meal a clear local identity.
Gelato Ladies
Gelato Ladies offered house-made Italian-style gelato, coffee, waffles and pancakes in a small old-town café. It was an easy place to pause after exploring the centre, and it welcomed both children and pets.
