Some journeys are memorable because of everything you manage to see. Others stay with you because of the pace they create. This long weekend in Umbria belonged to the second kind: a few days of green horizons, old stone, unhurried meals and enough quiet to reset our routine.
We used the countryside as our base and alternated time at the property with visits to Spello and Perugia. There was no rigid itinerary—only breakfast overlooking the hills, a swim, a walk through medieval streets and the softer light at the end of the day.
Staying at Il Canalicchio
Our room at Il Canalicchio looked across fields, woods and olive groves. Mornings began outside, with breakfast above the pool and no pressure to leave immediately.
Towards evening, the valley changed colour and the resort became quieter. Watching sunset after an afternoon by the pool was one of the simplest moments of the trip.
Spello
Spello reveals itself gradually through uphill lanes, stone arches, plants and small views towards the plain. It is best explored without following the quickest route.
At sunset, the stone takes on warmer tones and lights begin to appear in the narrow streets.
Perugia
Perugia has the scale of a regional capital, but its historic centre still encourages slow exploration. Streets rise and fall between stone passages, squares and everyday city life.
Food accompanied the weekend rather than becoming a separate programme. Local cheeses, cured meats and simple dishes connected the landscape outside with what arrived at the table.
The trip worked because it moved naturally between rest and discovery: the pool and open countryside, Spello’s intimate streets, Perugia’s urban character and meals that did not need to be rushed.
The stay at Il Canalicchio was hosted. The account and opinions remain my own.
